NPP Chairman Stephen Ayensu Ntim withdraws from party duties due to serious illness

The family of Stephen Ayensu Ntim, National Chairman of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), has formally requested his ‘temporal’ withdrawal from all party activities due to serious health concerns requiring urgent medical attention and rest.

Mr. Ntim, a stalwart of the NPP, has been a pillar of the party’s leadership for decades from his early days as the First National Deputy Chairman to his current role at the helm.

The family’s letter, dated June 16, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders, paints a touching picture of a dedicated leader now battling “cognitive dissonance and mental incapacitation.”

They describe his condition as “not well at the moment,” raising serious concerns about his ability to continue fulfilling demanding political responsibilities.

However, they expressed deep worry over his present health condition, describing him as “not well at the moment” and suffering from “cognitive dissonance and mental incapacitation.”

The letter, signed by key family figures including Kingsley Oteng (Family Head) and Adelaide Ntim (MP), expresses deep distress over the party’s decision to schedule Mr. Ntim to chair a crucial meeting at Alisa Hotel on June 17, a role they argue he is currently unfit to perform.

The family warns that forcing him to attend or lead such a high-profile event could jeopardize his health and infringe on his personal rights

The letter stated, “Common sense dictates that Steve, as a matter of urgency, be temporarily excused, not only from the rigors of active politics but from intra-party activities in order to make way for needed peace and solace and for concentration on the ongoing required medical treatment process.”

The family also expressed shock and concern that the party leadership had scheduled Mr. Ntim to chair the event despite being aware of his incapacitated state.

The letter stressed “The family learned of a circular from the party Headquarters signed by its General Secretary about a convened party meeting to be held at Alisa Hotel on June 17th 2025. We are concerned, deeply saddened and object to the fact that Steve is scheduled to chair the event, although it is known to the party rank and file he is indisposed and incapacitated to be in attendance, let alone chairing the function.”

They urged the NPP hierarchy to acknowledge the seriousness of the situation and prioritize his recovery, while his future role within the party remains under review.

“We the family members of Mr. Stephen Ntim, trust the NPP party hierarchy and stakeholders to accordingly do the right thing ans excuse Mr. Ntim from being a part of the impending meeting and in events of the near future, while his future plans decisions and considerations are under review and consultations,” the letter emphasized.

This development follows previous instances where Mr. Ntim took brief breaks from party duties, including a short hiatus from the nationwide “Thank You” tour earlier in the year to attend to pressing matters, reflecting ongoing health challenges.
