Former Subin Constituency Member of Parliament, Eugune Boakye Antwi, has cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against overreacting when its members are summoned by state security agencies.
He emphasized “NPP should not be jumping up and down because a member of the party has been invited to EOCO.”
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face program monitored by Kumasimail, Antwi warned that such reactions risk creating the false impression that the NPP is a refuge for criminals.
Antwi emphasized that an invitation to appear before agencies like the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) or the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) does not automatically imply wrongdoing.
“Sometimes there may be no case at all,” he explained, citing examples where officials are called in merely to provide information or clarify documents signed during their tenure in government.
He said, “The fact that I am invited to appear before NIB doesn’t mean I am a criminal. Maybe it was a document I signed at the ministry which they want more information on as part of their investigation.”
Highlighting the importance of public perception, Antwi stressed the need for the party to send a clear message to Ghanaians that the NPP is not a “sanctuary for criminals,” especially as the nation focuses on development.
Antwi stated “We should also send a message to Ghanaians that the NPP is not a sanctuary or haven for criminals because we have a nation to build.
Addressing concerns about what such summonses imply for the party’s reputation, he remarked, “If somebody has been invited just because he was a minister, deputy minister, or agency head to go before NIB, EOCO, or the Attorney General to answer questions, why should we make it appear that the whole party is under siege and that everybody is being targeted?”
Reflecting on his own experience, Antwi noted that despite his time in government, he has not been called in for questioning.
However, he affirmed his readiness to cooperate if summoned, stating, “If I am invited tomorrow to appear, I will go because I know I have nothing to hide, and that should be the reference point.”
He concluded by urging party members and supporters to avoid assumptions that every investigation equates to guilt or arrests. Instead, he called for patience and respect for the work of state agencies, saying, “We should allow the state agencies to work.”
