Former Minister for Chieftaincy Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, widely known as Asabee, has revealed his intention to contest for the National Chairman position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) when the opportunity arises.
In an exclusive interview on Asempa’s Ekosiisen programme, monitored by Kumasimail, Asabee emphasized the need for a dynamic and energetic leader to steer the party forward.
He asserted that the NPP requires a chairman whose voice commands respect and who can inject fresh energy into the party’s operations.
“We need someone who, when he speaks as Chairman, everyone listens. The person must be able to engage widely and bring new energy into the game,” Asabee stated.
He highlighted that politics thrives on energy and motivation, noting that party supporters rely on trust and the leader’s ability to inspire and lead from the front.
“That’s the energy and conviction I bring,” he added.
Asabee further underscored his readiness, citing his experience, understanding of the party’s spirit, and the lessons learned from past leaders.
“At my age, I still have the energy, the voice, and the conviction. The spirit and goodwill our founding leaders instilled remain with us, and we must carry that forward for the next generation,” he said.
He also touched on the spiritual dimension of politics, explaining that strong spiritual grounding, coupled with learning from mentors and seeking divine guidance, is crucial for effective leadership.
“Without preparation, faith, and support from experienced leaders, one is vulnerable,” he warned.
While he has not officially declared his candidacy due to party discipline, Asabee confirmed his ambitions.
“I haven’t said it publicly because of party rules, but I am eyeing the position. I won’t do any flyers for now, it is only a teaser I put out, and with that, what I said was, ‘We need discipline and a structured party in the new era,’ “ he explained.
Asamoah Boateng stressed that formal preparations for the contest should begin only after the party’s conference paves the way for it.
He cautioned against premature campaigning, which often involves financial transactions that could lead to the monetization of party positions.
“Preparatory work is a private matter, but meeting large groups prematurely can lead to paying money, and if you pay, we return to the monetization problem. If you don’t pay, you’re sidelined,” he lamented.
When asked about other prominent figures like Hon. Amoako Atta, Chairman Wontumi, and John Boadu, who have been mentioned as potential candidates, Asabee dismissed suggestions that he is delaying his announcement.
“There is no timetable out there that I am delaying my intent. If others want to incur their costs, they should. That’s the monetization they continue to bring into the party. Where is the discipline? Nobody has asked anyone to start yet,” he concluded.
