The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has criticized the Ghana Police Service for the arrest of two TikTok personalities, Fante Comedy and AY, along with social media activist Sir-Obama Pokuase, over a viral video.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the NPP Youth Wing described the arrests as an unnecessary use of police resources against young citizens whose comments, though possibly unsavoury, were expressions of opinion protected under freedom of speech.
“We are shocked that a serious establishment like the Ghana Police Service will waste resources to arrest and detain young citizens who, out of exuberance, made comments deemed unsuitable for the moment,” the statement read. “These Social Media Activists have no actionable ability to cause any harm nor intend to do so.”
The Youth Wing accused the police of adopting a partisan approach, alleging that the current Inspector General of Police (IGP), a former deputy under the NPP administration, has tolerated similar or worse comments from activists affiliated with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“Why the intolerance today? Why the malicious treatment of all persons who identify with the NPP?” the statement questioned, calling the arrests “a deliberate attempt to intimidate.”
The group further criticized the police for failing to arrest suspects involved in a July 11 violent attack on Awutu Senya East MP Hawa Koomson and other NPP members during the Ablekuma North Constituency rerun, despite what it claimed was clear evidence of NDC affiliation among the attackers.
“This is shamelessly biased and absolutely partisan,” the statement asserted.
The Youth Wing called for the “unconditional and immediate” release of the three detainees, insisting the arrests undermine Ghana’s democratic ethos.
The statement was signed by Salam Mustapha, National Youth Organizer of the NPP.
