Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, has confirmed the arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi commonly known as Adenta Kumi during a dawn operation by armed state operatives on Friday.
In a Facebook post, Assafuah described the incident as a “troubling” and “Rambo-style” raid carried out around 3 a.m. by eight men believed to be operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
According to the MP, six of the operatives were masked and armed with AK-47 rifles, while the remaining two were in plain clothes.
“These Rambo-style actions by government continue to raise concerns that bother on free speech and good governance,” Assafuah wrote, ending the post with the hashtag #FreeAdentaKumiNow.
Family sources, who corroborated the account to Citi News, confirmed that Kumi was taken from his home during the early morning raid. As of now, neither the NIB nor the Ministry of National Security has issued an official statement regarding the arrest or the motives behind it.
Kumi, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate, recently submitted a petition to President John Mahama calling for the dissolution of the committee investigating the removal of the Chief Justice.
He alleged misconduct on the part of some committee members.
In the petition, Kumi claimed that on May 15, 2025 following the committee’s inaugural sitting Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu, along with Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi, were seen dining at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area with Thaddeus Sory, the legal representative for petitioner Daniel Ofori.
Kumi alleged that the group was overheard discussing matters related to the ongoing inquiry, raising concerns over impartiality and due process.
The case continues to draw public scrutiny as calls grow for transparency and accountability in the actions of state security agencies.
