Opoku Ware Senior High School (OWASS) in Kumasi has officially become Ghana’s first Smart School under the government’s ambitious Ghana Smart Schools Project. The initiative aims to revolutionize secondary education through digital transformation.

At a commissioning ceremony held at the school, Lawrence Hornuvo, General Manager of KA Technologies, addressed dignitaries, educators, and students, emphasizing the project’s significance. He stated that the launch marks a pivotal moment in Ghana’s educational journey, transforming classrooms into hubs of innovation and digital learning.

“Today is more than a ceremony; it is a declaration that Ghana is committed to reimagining and redefining education for the 21st century,” Hornuvo declared.

“We gather here not just to inaugurate a facility but to ignite a movement—one that positions our classrooms as centers of innovation, creativity, and digital learning.”

The Smart Classroom Project introduces state-of-the-art learning environments equipped with Interactive smart screens for engaging instruction, tablets for every student to support active hands-on learning, reliable internet connectivity to unlock global knowledge, Solar-powered charging cabinets to ensure sustainable energy useModern and ergonomic furniture that fosters comfort and focus.

These facilities will enable teachers to deliver content via the KATON360 Learning Management System a robust digital platform that supports interactive teaching, real-time assessments, digital resources, and personalized learning journeys.

Hornuvo highlighted that the classroom of today transcends traditional boundaries, becoming a dynamic, connected space where technology enhances curiosity, collaboration, and comprehension.

He reaffirmed KA Technologies’ commitment to aligning with the Ministry of Education’s vision to equip every senior high school in Ghana with the Smart Classroom experience.

“This project is not simply about installing gadgets it is about unlocking potential, bridging inequalities, and future-proofing our education system,” he emphasized.

Announcing a significant milestone, Hornuvo revealed that 1,350,000 computer tablets have been fully assembled and are ready for distribution to beneficiary schools.

To date, 334,489 tablets have been distributed, with the remaining units scheduled for release in the coming weeks. First-year students in the Oti, Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Western North, Savannah, and North East regions have already received their tablets.

Nationwide distribution is set to commence in June 2025.To ensure the effective use of the KATON360 LMS, KA Technologies will collaborate with stakeholders to provide comprehensive training for both teachers and students.

The platform includes engaging educational content, ranging from textbooks and videos to interactive learning features and assessment tools.

Hornuvo appealed to the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to facilitate procurement processes for the supply of solar charging cabinets to all schools.

He also stressed the importance of prioritizing robust internet infrastructure, which is critical to the success of the smart school experience.

“Together, we are not only reshaping education in Ghana—we are setting a standard for the continent,” Hornuvo concluded. “A standard where every child, regardless of location, has access to quality digital learning and a brighter future.”

The Ghana Smart Schools Project, launched by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in March 2024, aims to transform existing schools into smart institutions and provide technology-assisted devices to enhance teaching, learning, and research.

KA Technologies is responsible for producing the Students’ Mate Tablets distributed under the initiative.

The headmaster of Opoku Ware School, Rev. Fr. Steven Owusu Sekyere, who also serves as the National President of the Conference of the Heads of Assisted Schools (CHASS), pledged to ensure the proper use of the facilities. He assured that measures have been put in place to prevent abuse.

He also called on the government to expedite action on installation of Solar charging systems in dormentary to enable student change the smart tablets.

The Ghana Smart Schools Project represents a strategic endeavor aligned with the Ministry of Education’s digitalization strategy, aimed at equipping Ghanaian students with the necessary tools and skills to thrive in the era of the fourth industrial revolution.
