The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has reportedly rejected the first nomination submitted by the Paramount Queen Mother of the Asante Mampong Traditional Area, Nana Afrakoma Difie, to occupy the vacant Mampong Paramount Stool.
The Mampong stool became vacant following the passing of the late Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the Asante Mamponghene and the second-in-command to the Asantehene.
He died on Good Friday, March 28, 2025, after a brief illness.
In line with Asante custom, the royal Bretuo family of Asante Mampong formally informed Otumfuo of the death, and he directed that the final funeral rites be held 40 days after the one-week observance.
Following this, the Queen Mother was expected to present a suitable candidate for Otumfuo’s endorsement in 40 days as Otumfuo directed.
However, sources close to Manhyia Palace indicate that the Asantehene has rejected the Queen Mother’s initial nomination, believed to be her biological son, who is reportedly under the age of 25.
A member of the royal Bretuo family, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated: “What we do know is that Otumfuo has rejected the Queen Mother’s first proposal. The nominee, her son, does not meet the age and maturity required for the role. She was also warned to do the right thing or risk having her family lineage questioned ”.
Another source within the Kumasi Traditional Council emphasized the importance of the position. “The next Mamponghene is not just a traditional ruler. He becomes the second-in-command to the Asantehene and also the President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs.
He may act on behalf of Otumfuo when he is away. Such a position demands maturity, education, and broad respect.”
The selection of a Mamponghene is critical in the governance of the Asante Kingdom. Historically, the Mamponghene has played a central role in the administration of the Ashanti Region and in the support of the Golden Stool, especially in times of transition or absence of the Asantehene.
As of now, it is unclear when a new name will be submitted to the Asantehene for consideration.
The Queen Mother is expected to consult with the appropriate traditional leaders and elders to present a new, qualified candidate in accordance with Asante customs.
The Mampong stool remains one of the most significant and respected in the Asante Kingdom, and the eventual nominee must embody the values and leadership qualities required to uphold the dignity of the role.
