Renowned environmental expert, Prof. Esi Awuah, delivered a passionate call to action on environmental sustainability during the launch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Women’s Manifesto in Kumasi.
Her remarks centered on the importance of responsible resource management and the need for communities to unite in preserving Ghana’s environment for future generations.
Prof. Awuah highlighted the pressing environmental challenges facing the country, particularly the negative impacts of mining on local ecosystems.
“We are attacking our natural resources without regard for the environment,” she stated, noting that poor mining practices have led to environmental degradation, deforestation, and water pollution.
She emphasized that the current unsustainable approach to mining is not only harming the environment but also undermining the livelihoods of future generations.
She expressed concern over the way communities have neglected the environmental protection efforts of previous generations.
“Our forefathers knew when to harvest, when to plant, and how to protect the land,” Prof. Awuah remarked, urging the public to return to these sustainable practices.
Prof. Awuah also called on mining companies and the government to ensure that mining activities are conducted responsibly, with minimal impact on the environment.
She advocated for stronger regulations and community involvement in mining projects, emphasizing that local communities must benefit from the natural resources they depend on.
“Mining must be done in a way that benefits our people and respects the environment,” she said. “We need to ensure that mining is a sustainable activity that does not leave our rivers polluted and our lands barren.”
As part of the NDC’s commitment to environmental sustainability, Prof. Awuah underscored the importance of educating the next generation on environmental stewardship.
She advocated for the integration of environmental education into school curricula, stating that “every school should have a place where students can learn about sustainability and the importance of protecting our environment.”
In closing, Prof. Awuah urged Ghanaians to take collective action to safeguard the environment, stating that the well-being of future generations depends on the decisions made today.
She expressed confidence that under the leadership of former President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC will implement policies that prioritize environmental protection and sustainable development.
The NDC Women’s Manifesto includes comprehensive plans to tackle environmental challenges, with a focus on promoting green jobs, implementing stricter environmental regulations, and ensuring responsible resource management across sectors.
Prof. Awuah’s message resonated with attendees, who applauded her vision for a more sustainable future.
The NDC’s focus on environmental sustainability is seen as a key pillar in its broader strategy to create a healthier, more prosperous Ghana.
