Ashanti Region- The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has announced a revision in the completion dates for several road projects in the Ashanti region.

The Atimatim-Maase and Maase to Abass Junction Meduma roads, initially scheduled for completion by 28 February 2025, are now expected to be finished by 27 February 2027.

The announcement was made in response to a question from Hon. Damata Ama Appianimaa Salam, Member of Parliament for the constituency, who inquired about the completion timelines for the Atimatim-Maase Road, Maase-Meduma Road, Atimatim Township Road, and Edwenasi-Buoho Road.

Atimatim-Maase and Maase-Meduma Roads: Progress and Delay

The project located within the Afigya-Kwabre South District of the Ashanti region, the Atimatim-Maase Road and the Maase-Meduma-Abass Junction are part of a 42 km road rehabilitation contract overseen by the Department of Urban Roads. The project commenced on March 1, 2023, with an initial completion target of February 28, 2025.

Agbodza provided detailed updates on each road project as follows.

The Minister explained “The project commenced on 1 March 2023 for completion by 28 February 2025, which was later revised to 27 February 2027. The contractor is on site and the works are at 70% physical completion.

“The 3.75 km Atimatim Maase Road is at Pramasil Stage, whilst the 3.1 km Maase-Meduma Road is at Sabbase Stage,” Agbodza stated.

Atimatim Township Road

Located approximately 3.9 km from Pankrono on the Kumasi-Chambulingu Road (IR4) in the Kwabre East District, the Atimatim Township Road is being upgraded under two projects totaling 5.3 km. These are titled “Upgrading of Atimatim Town Road 2.60 km Lot 1” and “Upgrading of Atimatim Town Road 2.7 km Lot 2” to bituminous surfacing.

The minister stressed that the contracts commenced on 26 May 2023 and initially have a completion target of 25 May 2024.

“The contract commenced on 26 May 2023 for completion by 25 May 2024. The projects are at physical completion 27.5% and 9.6% respectively.”

However, he added that contractors are presently not on site due to delays in payment for works already done.

He said “The contractors are currently not on site due to delay in payment for works done. Construction of concrete U-Drains was being executed on both Lot 1 and 2 before the contractor left site.

“The Ghana Highway Authority is in discussion with the contractor to complete all outstanding works,” he opined.

Edwenase-Buoho Road

The Minister for Roads and Highways explained that the Edwenase-Buoho Road is a branch of National Road 10 (Suame-Ofinso Road) and has long supported the movement of people, goods, and agricultural produce from Bono East to market centers in Kumasi. It also serves as a detour to Kumasi’s Central Business District for vehicles traveling from Ofinso and beyond.

The minister assured that the project is scheduled for completion by February 2027.

He remarked “The said road has been awarded under the current contract titled ‘Upgrading of Buoho-Sasa-Afrancho Road 7 km and Critical Access Road 4.1 km’. The project commenced on 17 February 2025 for completion by 16 February 2027. The contractor is currently on site and the progress of work is 6.8% physical completion.”
