The Ghana Scholarship Secretariat has awarded a full scholarship to Dorcas Baafi, a 21-year-old former student of Oguaa Senior High Technical School, to pursue a degree in Medicine, following a viral social media appeal highlighting her financial struggles.
Dorcas, who hails from Jukwa Frami in the Central Region, achieved an impressive aggregate score of 7 in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Despite her academic excellence, she was unable to further her education due to financial hardship, resorting to menial jobs to support herself.
Her story was brought to national attention after Facebook user Danny Kojo Mint shared her plight online. The widespread public reaction prompted swift intervention by the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, which granted her a comprehensive scholarship covering tuition, accommodation, and a stipend.
According to the Secretariat, the gesture reflects its core mandate of supporting brilliant but financially disadvantaged students across the country.
“The era of scholarships being reserved for the privileged is over. We are building Ghana’s future by investing in its people,” a statement from the Secretariat noted. It added that under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, the government remains committed to removing financial barriers to education for Ghana’s brightest minds.
The Secretariat emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader national vision to create equal opportunities for all, particularly in accessing higher education and professional training.
Dorcas’s scholarship serves as a beacon of hope for many talented students from low-income backgrounds aspiring to achieve their academic dreams.
