Director of Communications for the United Party, Solomon Owusu, has blamed former President Akufo-Addo and former Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia for the continued national debate on LGBTQ+ issues.
Speaking on GTV’s Prime Insights on April 11, Monited by Kumasi Mail, Mr Owusu argued that the matter would not still be dominating public discourse if decisive action had been taken earlier.
“President Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia are the reasons we are still here today discussing this LGBTQ+ issue,” he said.
According to him, the controversy could have been avoided if the former President had assented to the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill when it was presented to him.
The bill, commonly referred to as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, has remained a major subject of political and social debate in Ghana, with discussions centred on its legal, cultural, and human rights implications.
Mr Owusu’s comments come amid renewed public discourse on the issue, as political actors and interest groups continue to take positions on the proposed legislation.
President John Dramani Mahama has ранее indicated that the bill is not a priority, citing other pressing national concerns.
