The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested two young men for unlawful possession of firearms during an intelligence-led operation conducted in the early hours of Tuesday, July 9.
The suspects, identified as Acheampong Kwadwo, 21, and James Antwi Adjei, 24, were apprehended at known criminal hideouts in Nweneso, Trabuom, and Nkwawie, areas within the Atwima Districts of the Ashanti Region.
According to a statement from the police, the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit carried out the targeted operation based on credible intelligence. A search conducted during the arrests led to the recovery of two pump-action shotguns one bearing serial number ASAO 2164 2021, and another with no identifiable serial number.
Preliminary investigations suggest the weapons may have been stolen and intended for use in robbery operations across the Atwima Districts and the Greater Kumasi area.
The suspects are currently in police custody and assisting with ongoing investigations. The retrieved firearms have been secured as evidence.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ashanti Regional Command, confirmed the arrests and indicated that further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
The police reiterated their commitment to combating armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms in the region.
