The Student Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Ghana (Legon) has successfully negotiated a 25% reduction in Residential Facility User Fees for students residing in the university’s traditional halls of residence.
In an announcement made by SRC President Maradona Yeboah Adjei, also known by his stage names Guru and Gurunkz, on his Facebook page, confirmed that the reduction applies to both freshmen and continuing students.
The new fee structure will see charges reduced from GHS 3,000 to GHS 2,500 for freshmen and from GHS 1,500 to GHS 1,225 for continuing students.
The SRC attributed this achievement to persistent advocacy and petitions submitted to university authorities. “Our petition has yielded results. We are delivering our utmost best at every point in time for all students,” Gurunkz stated in his announcement.
This move is expected to ease the financial burden on students and their families, particularly amid rising costs of living.
The decision has been widely welcomed by students, many of whom had expressed concerns over the increasing cost of accommodation on campus.
The SRC has assured students that it will continue to engage university management to address other pressing student welfare issues.
