The University of Ghana has halted admissions into six of its learning centres for the 2026/27 academic year after the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) identified them as operating without valid accreditation.
GTEC, in a public notice, flagged the university’s centres in Koforidua, Cape Coast, Tamale, Ho/Tsito, Wa, and Sunyani as unaccredited and therefore unauthorized to run academic programmes.
The Commission further cautioned that certificates obtained through such unapproved centres would not be rec
ognised and urged prospective students to verify accreditation before enrolling.
Responding to the development, Prof. Olivia Kwapong, Dean of Distance Education, confirmed that the university will suspend new admissions to the affected centres until all accreditation standards are met.
“We won’t admit new students into these centres. We have to go by the regulations of GTEC. They are the regulators, and we respect their position fully,” she told JoyNews.
However, she assured that continuing students will not be relocated, as GTEC’s standard procedure allows institutions to “teach out” existing cohorts until they complete their programmes.
With new admissions suspended, the university plans to redirect applicants to other accredited centres.
Students from the Eastern and Volta regions may be sent to Accra or Tema, those in the northern areas could be posted to Kumasi, and applicants along the coast may be placed in Takoradi.
Prof. Kwapong added that GTEC officials, led by the Director-General, have already inspected the centres and issued specific directives.
The university is currently following procurement processes to conduct structural assessments, prepare bills of quantities, and undertake necessary upgrades.
“The onus is on us,” she noted. “These processes take time, but once GTEC is satisfied, we will proceed.”
She also reassured students that the validity of their certificates remains intact, stressing that all official certificates are issued solely from the Legon main campus.
“University of Ghana will not allow any satellite centre to issue certificates,” she emphasised.
