Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has pledged the government’s firm commitment to easing Ghana’s mounting transport woes, promising an influx of new high-occupancy buses for both state-run services and private operators.
Speaking during a brief engagement with transport stakeholders at the Ministry of Transport on Friday, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang relayed President John Dramani Mahama’s direct assurance on bolstering the sector.
She emphasized urgent action to deploy new vehicles and expedite repairs on existing fleets, aiming to restore reliability for commuters nationwide.
“His Excellency the President has asked me to assure all of you that he will give support to Metro Mass, Ayalolo, and the private sector with new high-occupancy buses in order to augment services in the medium term,” the Vice President stated.
She added that plans are underway to fast-track repairs for buses needing attention.
“We also have plans to ensure that those that need to be repaired, the process will be expedited to ensure they can put more buses on the road as quickly as possible,” she said.
The Vice President’s intervention comes amid widespread complaints from commuters and operators about vehicle shortages, rising fares, and service disruptions, exacerbated by aging fleets and recent fuel price hikes. Metro Mass Transit and Ayalolo services, key players in public transport, have struggled to meet demand in major cities like Accra and Kumasi.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged unity and professionalism to build a world-class system.
“My plea is that let us continue to work together to develop a transportation system that prioritizes fairness, efficiency, and excellence. And I know, and you know that we can. We are relying on each other to make that possible,” she remarked.
She stressed ethical operations as foundational to public trust.
“And we can do this by upholding high standards, treating passengers with respect, and by so doing, we will also strengthen the trust of Ghanaians in the private transport sector.”
