The West Africa Action Network on Small Arms (WAANSA) Ghana has urged the media to take an active role in addressing the growing threat of small arms proliferation in the country and across the West African region.
Speaking at a media workshop on arms proliferation, WAANSA Ghana President emphasized the importance of responsible journalism in raising public awareness and influencing policy decisions to curb the spread of illicit weapons.

The workshop, organized in collaboration with key stakeholders, sought to equip journalists with the knowledge and skills necessary to report effectively on issues related to arms control, security, and peacebuilding. Participants were trained on the legal frameworks governing arms proliferation, including national and international treaties aimed at controlling the spread of small arms and light weapons.

The WAANSA Ghana President highlighted the devastating impact of unchecked arms circulation, citing its role in fueling violence, crime, and instability in the region. He expressed concern over the increasing accessibility of illicit firearms, which he attributed to weak enforcement of arms regulations and the lack of public awareness on the dangers of illegal arms trade.

“The proliferation of small arms is a major threat to peace and security, not just in Ghana but across West Africa. It contributes to conflicts, armed robberies, and other violent crimes. The media has a crucial role in educating the public and advocating for stronger arms control measures,” he stated.

He further called for enhanced collaboration between the government, security agencies, civil society organizations, and the media to ensure the effective implementation of arms control policies. According to him, strengthening existing laws and ensuring their enforcement are critical steps toward addressing the issue.
As part of the workshop, journalists were encouraged to adopt responsible reporting practices that highlight the human cost of arms proliferation while pushing for policies that promote safety and security. The President of WAANSA Ghana also reiterated the organization’s commitment to supporting advocacy efforts aimed at strengthening arms regulations and preventing the illegal circulation of firearms.
The event also provided an open forum for participants to discuss challenges related to arms control and explore possible solutions. Attendees expressed their commitment to using their platforms to raise awareness about the dangers of small arms proliferation and advocate for policies that ensure national security.
WAANSA Ghana remains a key advocate in the fight against illicit arms trafficking, working with both local and international organizations to promote peace and security across the region.
