The Ghetto Youths Association in Ghana’s Central Region has voiced strong discontent with politicians, expressing that they refuse to be exploited in the upcoming elections.
“We, the ghetto youth, have advised ourselves that we will no longer allow ourselves to be used by any President, Member of Parliament, District Chief Executive, or Assemblyman to cause chaos in polling stations, especially in elections they know they will lose.”
In an interview, with local journalist Yaw Boagyan, General President of the Ghetto Youths Association in the Asikuma Odebeng Brakwa District emphasized that past experiences of being used for violence and then abandoned have led them to reject such manipulation.
He stated, “We will not allow ourselves to be used again by any politician to cause mayhem”
“We fight, cause trouble, and when the government arrests us, they ignore our efforts for them and put us in prison. Many of our members have been imprisoned, so we’re now alert and trying to avoid trouble”, he stressed.
The association is urging its members to maintain peace and warned politicians against entering their communities for deals, asserting that any leader inciting violence will face consequences, including arrest by the youth themselves.
“We want peace and fair elections. We are united to fight against violence during the election period.”
