Former President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Yaw Acheampong Boafo, has urged supporters and delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to consider either Paul Afoko or Boakye Agyarko for the position of National Chairman.
Speaking in an interview on Kumasi-based Fakye TV with Kojo Marfo on March 19, 2026, Yaw Boafo said he would be comfortable with either of the two leading figures contesting the position, stressing that the party needs strong leadership ahead of future elections.
“If Paul Afoko or Boakye Agyarko contests, either of the two is fine with me. I’ll even campaign for them for free because we need that presence; we need that strong leadership,” he said.
Although Yaw Boafo did not directly mention any other candidate, his comments appeared to oppose any decision by the party to elect Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, as National Chairman.
His remarks come at a time when discussions within the party are intensifying over who should lead the NPP at the national level following the recent political developments and preparations for upcoming internal elections.
Mr. Boafo emphasized the need for a strong and credible figure to steer the party and help restore confidence among supporters and grassroots members.
Political observers say his endorsement could influence sections of the party, particularly among professionals and legal practitioners who continue to play a significant role in the NPP’s internal decision-making.
