Employees of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) working under Zoomlion in the Kadjebi District in the Oti region have given a two-week ultimatum to their employers including the government to pay their outstanding allowances for the past 18 months.
The workers, who have been employed by YEA for 10 to 18 years, claim that the non-payment of their allowances has severely impacted their economic well-being, leaving many bedridden.
They have threatened to lay down their tools if their demands are not met within the given timeframe. Johnson Asiamah, a team leader, expressed the workers’ plight, stating that some colleagues have died due to inability to pay for medical treatment, while others have been evicted from their homes for failure to pay rent.
He appealed to management to facilitate their payments, emphasizing the need to take care of themselves and their children.
The workers’ ultimatum comes as a last resort, and they hope that their employers will take immediate action to address their concerns.
Failure to do so may result in a strike, halting work and affecting services in the district.
