ECG Eastern Region Recovers GH1.54million from Power Theft in 2025

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Eastern Region has recovered GH¢1,539,986.00 from customers engaged in power theft and other illegal electricity-related activities in 2025.

This was disclosed by the Eastern Regional General Manager, Ing. Emmanuel Appoe, during a media engagement held Wednesday at the ECG Regional Office in Koforidua.

According to him, the illegal acts uncovered through intensified monitoring and revenue protection exercises included 33 cases of meter bypass, 37 instances of meter tampering, and 47 unauthorized

Ing. Appoe expressed concern over the persistent nature of power theft, noting that such activities continue to undermine the company’s operations and lead to significant revenue losses.

“While we are committed to delivering reliable power supply, some customers are also engaging in illegalities that affect our operations. These acts do not only reduce our revenue but also impact service delivery,” he stated.

He emphasized that the company’s Revenue Protection teams have stepped up surveillance and enforcement across the region, leading to the detection and recovery of the stolen power value.

The ECG boss warned that the company will not relent in its efforts to clamp down on offenders and urged the public to desist from illegal connections and meter tampering.

Beyond power theft, Ing. Appoe also highlighted other challenges affecting the electricity distribution network, including transformer vandalism, bushfires, and road accidents involving electrical installations, which contribute to power outages and increased operational costs.

“The Eastern Region recorded 54 burnt poles due to bush fires, 13 incidents where vehicles ran into transformers as well as some chain saw operators fell trees on our network, resulting in power outages.
The sad aspect is that these disturbances result in long hours of power outages, while suspects fled the scene and failed to take responsibility for the damage caused to ECG assets, resulting in additional operational cost”

He appealed to the public to support ECG’s efforts by reporting illegal activities and protecting electrical infrastructure.

Looking ahead to 2026, the Eastern Regional Manager assured customers of improved service delivery but stressed the need for timely bill payment and compliance with electricity usage regulations.

“We encourage all customers to play their part by paying their bills promptly and avoiding illegal practices so we can continue to provide stable and reliable electricity,” he added.

Management said ,Eastern Region currently has 466,123 active customer population made up of 312,913 postpaid and 153,210 prepaid Customers stating that it is implementing the Loss Reduction Project.

“The Region is also implementing the Loss Reduction Project (LRP) in seven (7) Districts, namely, Koforidua, Tafo, Nkawkaw, Suhum, Kibi, Asamankese and Oda. Asesewa District is the eighth district, piloting the project, pending approval for full implementation.
Under the LRP Project, some 69,033 prepaid meters have been installed in the 7 districts”.

ECG says it remains committed to strengthening its systems and working closely with stakeholders, including the media, to curb power theft and impro
ve power distribution across the region.
