The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has shut down ZXZ Company Limited, a Chinese-owned factory producing Moonda brand mattresses in Afienya, for manufacturing with uncertified and substandard materials.
Following a tip-off, the GSA conducted a market survey, uncovering that the company was violating national standards by using unapproved materials.
During a raid led by the GSA, supported by the Ghana Police Service (GPS) and media, it was revealed that the factory was using polystyrene—a material typically used for packaging electrical equipment—instead of the polyurethane required for mattress production.
George Anti, Head of the GSA’s Special Products Unit, stressed the dangers of such practices, highlighting the significant health risks posed to consumers. “The polystyrene material used in these mattresses is harmful for human use.
Prolonged exposure could lead to severe health issues, ultimately affecting the productivity of the population,” Mr. Anti explained.
Further investigation revealed that ZXZ Company Limited had been operating for months without registering with the GSA. In addition to mattress production, the company was also assembling televisions, refrigerators, and soundbar speakers under the Asano brand—again, without the necessary licences.
A Chinese national at the factory, who identified herself as the supervisor, initially defended the company’s practices, claiming the materials were legally accepted in China. However, she later admitted that the factory did not have the required certifications and consented to the shutdown.
“We are committed to ensuring that all products on the market are certified and meet approved standards,” Mr. Anti emphasized, adding that the factory will remain closed until proper certifications are obtained and compliant materials are used.
“Ghana welcomes business, but it must be conducted within the proper regulatory framework.”
During a random inspection of the same industrial zone, authorities also uncovered an unlicensed Chinese-owned plastic recycling plant operating without GSA approval.
The GSA has issued a stern warning to all foreign-owned businesses, urging them to register with the Authority or face severe penalties.
The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) has long raised concerns about foreign companies producing substandard goods at lower prices, which undercuts local manufacturers.
“These substandard mattresses are sold at prices lower than those from established brands like Ashfoam and Latex Foam, damaging local businesses,” an AGI spokesperson noted.
Concerns were also raised about ZXZ Company Limited potentially evading taxes, depriving the state of much-needed revenue.
