With Ghana’s presidential and parliamentary elections approaching on December 7, 2024, the United States Department of State has enacted a new visa restriction policy aimed at individuals involved in undermining Ghana’s democratic process.

Announced on Monday, this policy will restrict U.S. visas for anyone found responsible for actions that compromise Ghana’s democratic integrity.

Under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, these restrictions apply to specific individuals involved in anti-democratic activities and do not target the general Ghanaian public or government.

In its statement, the U.S. emphasized Ghana’s longstanding democratic achievements, celebrating over 30 years of peaceful power transitions as a model of stability in the region.

The visa policy reflects Washington’s commitment to upholding democratic values worldwide, with a focus on protecting fair and transparent electoral processes.

The restrictions will target anyone attempting to manipulate the election, employ violence, intimidate voters, obstruct freedoms of assembly, or improperly sway the election’s outcome. Family members of those engaged in these acts may also face visa restrictions.

By introducing this measure, the U.S. signals its solidarity with Ghanaians who aspire to a free and peaceful election.

The policy is a reminder of America’s stance against electoral interference and commitment to safeguarding democracy in Ghana.
