In a significant display of statesmanship, Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has conceded defeat in the 2024 presidential election.
In a statement issued before the Electoral Commission’s official declaration, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the victory of former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“Our internal analysis of the election results indicates that former President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has won the presidential election. Similarly, the NDC has emerged victorious in the parliamentary elections,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
He further noted that while final seat confirmations are pending, the NPP does not anticipate any changes to the projected outcome. In a gesture of unity, Dr. Bawumia revealed that he had personally called President-elect Mahama to congratulate him on his victory, respecting the will of the Ghanaian people.
“Ghanaians have spoken through their votes. The people have chosen change at this time, and we respect their decision wholeheartedly,” he added, emphasizing the importance of preserving Ghana’s peace and stability during the political transition.
Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude to God for guiding him throughout the electoral process and reiterated his commitment to placing Ghana’s interests above personal political ambitions. “Ghana is more important than any individual political ambition. We must always put Ghana first,” he affirmed.
The Vice President also called for calm among NPP supporters and urged the international and investor communities to continue believing in Ghana’s reputation as a peaceful and democratic nation. “These are among our nation’s most valuable assets,” he remarked.
