In a significant development, the Supreme Court has granted a stay of execution application filed by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament for Effutu, halting the enforcement of a Speaker of Parliament ruling that declared four parliamentary seats vacant.
Following the court’s decision, Afenyo-Markin addressed the media, urging his party members to remain steadfast and focus on victory in the upcoming elections.
Speaking to supporters and journalists outside the court, Afenyo-Markin reaffirmed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) commitment to the democratic process, emphasizing that the party does not believe in violence but in the rule of law.
“We are democrats; we don’t believe in violence. This is political chaos, and we came to court because we believe in the justice system,” he stated.
Afenyo-Markin expressed satisfaction with the court’s ruling, which he believes reinforces not only the rights of the individuals affected by the Speaker’s ruling but also the peace and stability of the political environment. “Indeed, the court has just reinforced the rights of those involved, and peace will prevail,” he added.
Addressing the larger political picture, Afenyo-Markin called on his colleagues in the NPP, particularly those who have remained loyal despite recent challenges, to continue their hard work.
He singled out the majority of women who have been working tirelessly to support the party and the industry, thanking them for their dedication. He also acknowledged the support of senior members of parliament and other party officials who have remained committed to the cause.
However, Afenyo-Markin did not shy away from expressing his dissatisfaction with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), whom he referred to as lacking credibility in governance.
He urged NPP members to remain united and work hard to secure victory in the upcoming elections, emphasizing the importance of winning both presidential and parliamentary seats. “We don’t have a perfect government, but we have elections to win. If we go all out and win massively, the NDC will have no chance,” he declared.
Reflecting on the NPP’s performance in the Central Region during the previous elections, where the party won only 10 parliamentary seats despite President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo securing 96% of the vote, Afenyo-Markin urged party members not to be complacent.
He encouraged them to focus on winning as many parliamentary seats as possible, particularly in the 275 constituencies across the country.
In his closing remarks, Afenyo-Markin called on all parties involved in the legal battle to respect the court’s decision and uphold the rule of law. “We don’t have any issues with anybody. Ours is to follow the law,” he said.
He urged his fellow party members to continue working hard and remain focused on the goal of securing a resounding victory in the upcoming elections.
As the NPP prepares for the electoral battle ahead, Afenyo-Markin’s message of unity, hard work, and respect for the law resonates strongly within the party. With the Supreme Court’s ruling now in their favor, the NPP is poised to consolidate its efforts and push towards electoral success.
