Residents of Wuru, a border community in the Sisaala East Municipality of Ghana’s Upper West Region, are gripped with fear and uncertainty following the alleged abduction of a youth leader by soldiers believed to be from neighbouring Burkina Faso.
The victim, identified as Ibrahim Sadat, reportedly went missing on March 4, 2026, under circumstances community members suspect involve Burkinabé military personnel. Nearly two weeks after the incident, Sadat’s whereabouts remain unknown, intensifying anxiety among residents and prompting calls for urgent diplomatic intervention by Ghanaian authorities.
Sadat, believed to be in his early thirties, is married with three children. His disappearance has deepened the grief of his family, which is still mourning the death of his father, the late chairman of the National Democratic Congress in the Wuru community, who passed away less than a month ago.
According to a source in the community who spoke on condition of anonymity, Sadat had accompanied a friend to the Burkinabé border town of Kounou to seek medical treatment. Residents of Wuru often rely on a health facility in Kounou because it is only about five kilometres away and significantly closer than facilities within Ghana.
After arriving at the health centre, Sadat reportedly left his friend who was undergoing treatment and walked into the town to buy a drink at a local pub. However, he never returned.
His friend, after completing treatment, searched the town extensively but could not find him. He later returned to Wuru to report the disappearance, triggering widespread concern in the community.
Suspicion surrounding the alleged involvement of Burkinabé soldiers grew the following day when another resident of Wuru who travelled to Kounou for medical care reportedly saw Sadat’s motorcycle being ridden by a Burkinabé soldier from the health facility into the town.
Community members believe the alleged abduction may be linked to tensions dating back to December 2025, when some Burkinabé soldiers were reportedly arrested after straying into Ghanaian territory near Wuru.
According to a community leader who spoke to this reporter, some soldiers across the border may believe Sadat played a role in their arrest.
“They think he was instrumental in exposing them when they entered Ghana,” the leader said. “That is why the community suspects this could be retaliation.”
Officials from local security agencies in the Sisaala East Municipality confirmed awareness of the situation and indicated that steps are being taken to address the matter through diplomatic and security channels. Authorities say efforts are underway to liaise with counterparts in Burkina Faso to establish the facts and secure the safe return of the missing youth leader.
Wuru lies several kilometres from the municipal capital, Tumu, a distance that often forces residents to depend on nearby Burkinabé communities for essential services such as healthcare and trade.
The town of Kounou, located in the Bieha Department of southern Burkina Faso, sits close to the Ghanaian border and has increasingly become a focal point for cross-border movement. The area has also experienced heightened security operations due to ongoing military activities against militant groups operating in parts of Burkina Faso.
Residents of Wuru say the incident has created panic within the community, with many fearing for their safety whenever they cross the border for medical care or trade.
Community leaders are therefore appealing to the Government of Ghana and national security agencies to urgently intervene and ensure the safe return of Sadat. They warn that failure to address the situation promptly could strain cross-border relations and deepen fear among communities that depend heavily on cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
For now, the people of Wuru wait anxiously, hoping that diplomatic engagement between Ghana and Burkina Faso will lead to answers—and the safe return of one of their own.
