Kwame Owusu Danso, the Vice-Presidential candidate for the Afrafanto Alliance, delivered a pointed critique of Ghana’s economic woes, blaming both the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for the country’s struggles.
Speaking at his official unveiling in Accra, Danso accused successive governments under former President John Mahama and current President Nana Akufo-Addo of mismanaging the economy and leading the nation into deeper crisis.
Reflecting on Ghana’s economic performance under the late President John Evans Atta Mills, Danso noted that the country once enjoyed a remarkable growth rate of 14.3%, driven by oil revenues.
However, he expressed disappointment at how quickly that progress was lost under Mahama’s leadership, leading Ghana to seek financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
“What we’re witnessing today is far worse,” Danso stated, highlighting the soaring prices of essential goods and the rapid depreciation of the cedi. “The economy is on the brink of collapse.”
In his most forceful critique, Danso took aim at Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, the head of Ghana’s Economic Management Team, accusing him of failing to deliver on his promises of economic stability. He argued that the high expectations placed on Bawumia during the 2016 election campaign have not been met.
“The so-called economic genius they paraded in 2016 has led us into a disaster,” he said. “We’re facing the real possibility of the dollar exchange rate hitting 50 cedis, inflation skyrocketing beyond 100%, and Ghana’s public debt ballooning to 2 trillion cedis.”
Danso positioned the Afrafanto Alliance’s Movement for Change as the only viable alternative to the NPP and NDC, stating that Ghanaians have grown weary of politicians and technocrats who fail to deliver when entrusted with leadership roles.
“We can no longer tolerate leaders who prioritize their own interests over the welfare of the people,” he asserted. “What Ghana needs is a new vision that prioritizes job creation, economic empowerment, and long-term sustainable growth.”
He reaffirmed his strong backing for Alan Kyerematen’s Great Transformational Plan, calling it the solution to Ghana’s current economic difficulties. Danso described the plan as a bold break from the past and a comprehensive strategy aimed at rebuilding the nation.
“This is not just about doing more of the same,” he stressed. “We’re proposing a complete transformation – one focused on sustainable growth that benefits all Ghanaians.”
Danso closed his address with a passionate appeal to Ghanaians to join the Movement for Change, emphasizing that the time had come for a new direction.
“This is our moment. Together, we will rebuild Ghana with hope, determination, and resilience,” he declared. “Movement for Change – Ghana will rise again!”
