The University of Sierra Leone (USL) has unveiled a range of newly purchased items and facilities aimed at improving learning, recreation, and the overall campus experience for students and staff. The official unveiling ceremony took place on Friday, 28th November 2025, at Fourah Bay College (FBC) Campus.
The items unveiled include canopies, a brass band set, a university bus, drone cameras, a musical set, game equipment, and a fully furnished resting facility for both students and lecturers.
Speaking during the event, the Vice Chancellor and Principal of USL, Professor Aiah Lebbie, said that the university’s transformation drive is well underway as the process which began with IPAM, is now progressing strongly at FBC, and will soon extend to COMAHS.
Professor Lebbie added that the newly established brass band will consist of about 200 members, emphasising that such investments are in line with his vision of creating a more conducive learning and working environment.
He added that his transformational plans include strengthening academic programs, improving infrastructure across all campuses, and expanding student support services to position the University of Sierra Leone as a competitive modern university.
He stressed the importance of teamwork across the university system and called on USL alumni to continue supporting the institution’s development efforts.
The Chancellor of the USL, Dr Margaret Catherine Baio-Gbanie IV, encouraged both staff and students to make use of the recreational and relaxation facilities to refresh their minds after demanding academic activities.
Also speaking at the ceremony was the Deputy Minister of Higher Education who reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting the USL. He emphasised that higher education extends beyond classroom learning and that the newly provided amenities are essential in improving the general university experience.
The Registrar of the University, Mr Munda J.S. Lebbie, explained that the brass band will light up university ceremonies and celebrations, while the drone cameras will support research and campus surveillance. He added that the resting garden will provide a comfortable space for students and lecturers to relax.
Deputy Vice Chancellors from the constituent colleges also delivered statements, commending the initiative and expressing optimism about the positive impact these additions will have on the university, its students and lecturers.
This unveiling ceremony marks another milestone in the USL’s ongoing efforts to improve academic life, promote student well-being, and modernise its facilities across all campuses.
