The African Union (AU) Commission has expressed deep concern over reported military strikes carried out by the United States in coordination with Israeli forces against targets inside Iran, warning that the escalation could further destabilize the Middle East and disrupt global stability.
In a press statement issued Friday from Addis Ababa, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, said the development marks a serious intensification of hostilities in the region.
Youssouf called for restraint, urgent de-escalation and sustained dialogue, stressing that all parties must act in full accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter to safeguard international peace and security.
He warned that continued escalation threatens to worsen global instability, with far-reaching implications for energy markets, food security and economic resilience—particularly in Africa, where conflict and economic pressures remain acute.
The AU Commission also urged all concerned actors to prioritize diplomatic engagement, including ongoing international mediation efforts facilitated by the Sultanate of Oman, to prevent further deterioration and uphold the international rules-based order.
Reiterating the AU’s longstanding position, Youssouf emphasized that sustainable peace can only be achieved through diplomacy, not through force.
The statement was issued by the AU’s Information and Communication Directorate.
