The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has commended the conduct of Uganda’s presidential elections and congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election.
In a statement issued Friday, the AU said Museveni secured 71.61 percent of the votes in the presidential polls held on January 15, 2026, reaffirming his mandate as the country’s leader.
Youssouf praised the overall management of the elections and acknowledged the efforts of regional and continental election observers deployed to Uganda.
He specifically expressed appreciation to former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan for his leadership of the JointAfrican Union–Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA)–Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Election Observation Mission.
The AU Chairperson said Jonathan’s role contributed to strengthening the credibility and effectiveness of the observation process during the polls.
Reiterating the African Union Commission’s commitment to democratic governance, Youssouf said the AU would continue supporting efforts to promote democracy, peace, security and development across the continent.
He also applauded the people of Uganda for their participation in the electoral process, describing it as a demonstration of their commitment to consolidating democratic gains.
The statement was released by the AU’s Information and Communication Directorate from its headquarters in Addis Ababa.
