Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has reaffirmed that the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill widely known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill will be passed by the current Parliament.
He made the remarks during the Kasoa Traditional Leaders and Stakeholders Forum, where community leaders, residents, and government officials gathered to deliberate on key development issues affecting the municipality.
Addressing participants, Bagbin attributed the delay in enacting the bill to the refusal of former President Nana Akufo-Addo to assent to it after it was passed by the previous Parliament. As a result, the bill lapsed with the dissolution of that Parliament.
Bagbin emphasized that the proposed legislation reflects the views of many Ghanaians, noting that it was shaped significantly by public input and supported by traditional authorities.
He further argued that the current Parliament is better positioned to pass the bill, citing changes in its composition compared to the previous legislature.
“Be assured that the law will be passed,” Bagbin said, expressing confidence that Parliament will take up the bill once it reconvenes.
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, which seeks to regulate issues related to sexual orientation and family values, has sparked intense national debate, drawing both strong support and criticism from various segments of Ghanaian society.
