A police operation at the private residence of the Bono East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ibrahim Baba Bukari, on Thursday night ended in tragedy, with his younger brother shot dead under unclear circumstances.
The deceased, 36-year-old Seidu Bakari, was reportedly killed during the raid, which took place around 10:00 p.m. on July 31 at Chairman Bukari’s Techiman residence.
The Ghana Police Service has yet to issue an official statement detailing the motive for the operation or the events that led to the fatal shooting.
In an interview, Chairman Bukari confirmed the incident and expressed outrage and disbelief over the killing. “This was an unprovoked attack. Seidu was in the house with two others when the police stormed in and opened fire. I still don’t understand why they would carry out such an operation at my home,” he stated.
The NPP Chairman alleged that the raid may have been politically motivated and suggested that he could have been the actual target. “I strongly suspect foul play and political machinations behind this. I fear for my life if they can do this to my brother in my own house, then I am not safe either,” he said.
Family members and residents have condemned the incident and are demanding full transparency from the police. They are calling for an immediate explanation from the Ghana Police Service regarding the purpose of the operation and the justification for the use of lethal force.
The body of Seidu Bakari has been deposited at a local morgue, and calls for an independent investigation are intensifying. The family is urging the Inspector General of Police to intervene and ensure justice is served.
Meanwhile, the incident has sent shockwaves through the Techiman community and sparked concern among political supporters and local residents, who are demanding accountability and urging authorities to clarify the events that led to the fatal shooting.
As of press time, the police had not responded to the allegations or released any official account of the operation.
