At the 2024 National Honours and Awards Ceremony, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo conferred the prestigious Order of the Volta (Membership) Award on Erastus Asare Donkor of JoyNews.

The accolade recognizes his fearless dedication to journalism and his significant contributions to national development.

Mr. Asare Donkor was lauded for his relentless investigative reporting on illegal mining, or galamsey, a destructive practice that has severely impacted Ghana’s environment and water bodies.

His work has not only exposed the harmful effects of galamsey but also galvanized public and governmental efforts to combat environmental degradation.

In his citation, President Akufo-Addo commended Mr. Asare Donkor for his bravery and commitment to promoting environmental protection through journalism. The journalist expressed gratitude to the President and dedicated the award to his team, acknowledging their collective efforts in championing the fight against environmental injustices.

The Order of the Volta, Ghana’s second-highest national honour, is awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the nation’s progress. Mr. Asare Donkor’s recognition highlights the crucial role of journalism in fostering accountability, transparency, and good governance.

The ceremony, attended by dignitaries such as Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, Ministers of State, and other prominent figures, underscored the significance of honoring citizens whose work advances the nation’s development.
