New Patriotic Party firebrand Kennedy Agyapong has strongly criticised the party’s decision to move forward with electing a new presidential candidate before resolving what he describes as “deep-rooted internal problems” that led to its defeat in the last elections.
Speaking at the 2025 Conference organised by the NPP Constituency Chairmen Caucus of Ghana, Agyapong said efforts by the Mike Oquaye-led fact-finding committee had so far failed to give the party a clear understanding of the reasons behind its electoral loss.
He warned that moving ahead with internal elections without first addressing the underlying issues could prove costly for the party.
We formed Mike Oquaye’s committee to do fact-finding, but as we sit here, those who matter in the party and need to know the causes of our defeat do not. All that we know is that Mike Oquaye came to brief us and said “expansion”; so is it because of expansion that we lost miserably? We have not answered that,” Agyapong told party members.
If we don’t solve those problems, you can bring Jesus Christ as your presidential candidate — we will still not make it,” he said. “Because all of us here that are going to campaign, what message are we going to give? We don’t know the causes of our defeat.”
Emergence of “monsters”
Mr Agyapong also criticised what he called the emergence of “monsters” within the party hierarchy, blaming internal power struggles for the divisions and poor performance.
There is nothing wrong with the system we have from bottom to top. Why we find something wrong with it is because we created more monsters in the party and allowed them to take decisions anyhow. That affected us. We need to solve that problem.”
He called on party leaders to prioritise unity and internal reform over individual ambitions.
For the sake of the party, let’s do the right thing. If they do the right thing, I can raise the money and organise this. At least if nothing at all, the polling station election should be done.”
The NPP has set 31 January 2026 to select its flagbearer. Already many potential candidates, including Ken Agyapong have expressed interest to lead the party to recapture power from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
