Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, a seasoned economist and former Energy Minister, has received strong backing from New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency chairpersons to contest for the position of National Chairman of the party.
Initially attending the 2025 NPP Constituency Chairmen Caucus Conference in Kumasi as a potential presidential hopeful, Agyarko was unexpectedly endorsed by a large number of constituency chairmen, who called on him to steer the affairs of the party at the national level.
Agyarko, known for his deep-rooted understanding of the party’s ideology and its historical antecedents such as the United Party, is widely regarded by party insiders as a unifying and experienced figure.
His prior involvement includes a bid for the flagbearership in 2007 and serving as the campaign manager during the party’s 2012 presidential run.
During his address to the chairmen, one of them interrupted him mid-speech, declaring that the NPP is at a critical crossroads and urgently needs an experienced leader to take the reins.
“The situation we are in right now requires an experienced person to lead this party,” the chairperson stated, urging his colleagues to unite behind Agyarko.
“If you can join your faith with mine, we must plead with this man to contest as the National Chairman.”
This call triggered loud and spontaneous chants of “National Chairman! National Chairman!” from the audience, signaling widespread support among the grassroots leadership.
Should Agyarko accept the call to run, he is expected to face stiff competition from other prominent figures who have already declared their interest former General Secretary John Boadu and Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Interestingly, both Boadu and Wontumi were present at the Kumasi event and witnessed the dramatic groundswell of support for Agyarko.
It remains to be seen whether this momentum behind Boakye Agyarko will alter the dynamics of the impending race, possibly leading his rivals to reconsider their bids. The NPP’s National Council has scheduled the party’s presidential primaries for January 31, 2026, with the national leadership contest expected to be equally pivotal for the party’s future direction.
