The former Executive Director of the National Service Authority (NSA), Osei Assibey Antwi, has reportedly apologised to a constituency chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region for what he described as wrongdoing during his tenure at the authority.

According to sources familiar with the meeting, the apology was delivered during a private engagement with party leadership, where Mr. Assibey Antwi appealed for forgiveness and sought the support of party officials to intervene in his ongoing legal troubles.

The former Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Chief Executive is said to have urged the party executives to add their voices to calls on the President and the Attorney-General to discontinue the case against him, which could result in a custodial sentence if he is convicted.

A source who was present at the meeting told Kumasi Mail that the former NSA boss appeared deeply concerned about the strength of the case against him.

“Judging from Osei Assibey’s voice, it is clear that his lawyers have advised him that the case against him is serious, hence his effort to rally support from the party. i became very said when broke down in tears in the meeting ,” the source said.

The source further indicated that Mr. Assibey Antwi acknowledged strained relationships with party members during his time in office.

“He admitted that he did not treat party people well and has now realised his mistakes. He is seeking our support, but all I can say for now is that his case does not look good,” the source added.

Background to the NSS Case

Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi is currently facing trial in connection with the National Service Authority payroll scandal, which emerged following investigations into alleged financial irregularities at the NSS.

The case centres on accusations that thousands of ghost names were allegedly maintained on the NSS payroll, leading to the wrongful payment of public funds over several years. Investigators claim the scheme resulted in significant financial losses to the state.

The Attorney-General has charged Mr. Assibey Antwi and other former NSS officials with offences including conspiracy, causing financial loss to the state, and related corruption charges. All accused persons have pleaded not guilty and are standing trial before an Accra High Court.

The case has drawn national attention as part of the government’s broader anti-corruption efforts and remains one of the most prominent public-sector accountability trials in recent years.
