Ghana’s foreign minister has met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv to press for the release of two Ghanaian nationals captured during the war in Ukraine.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said the talks on Tuesday focused primarily on securing the men’s release on humanitarian grounds. The two are being held as prisoners of war after allegedly fighting on the Russian side of the conflict.
Mr Ablakwa described the discussions as “constructive” and said Ghana was encouraged by assurances from the Ukrainian authorities.
“Our primary mission is to secure the release of our two compatriots on humanitarian grounds. We remain optimistic about a successful outcome,” he said.
The minister also raised concerns about alleged trafficking networks that target vulnerable African youths with false promises, leading some to become involved in the conflict.
“We cannot ignore the disturbing trend of trafficking syndicates luring vulnerable African youth into a war they did not sign up for,” he said, adding that Ghana was prepared to work with Ukraine and international partners to address the issue.
Mr Ablakwa conveyed the appreciation of President John Dramani Mahama and the Ghanaian government for what he described as Ukraine’s compliance with international law in protecting the rights of the detained Ghanaians.
Beyond the humanitarian appeal, both sides discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations, including cooperation in agriculture, defence, education and trade.
President Zelenskyy extended an invitation to President Mahama to visit Kyiv, signalling Ukraine’s interest in deepening diplomatic ties with Ghana.
The outcome of the discussions could shape Ghana’s next diplomatic steps as it seeks the safe return of its citizens while maintaining relations with both Ukraine and Russia amid the ongoing conflict.
