Ghana has formally notified Togo of its decision to seek international arbitration to resolve a long-running dispute over their maritime boundary.
The move comes after eight years of bilateral negotiations which, officials say, failed to produce a mutually agreed settlement.
In a statement, the government said the arbitration would be pursued under the framework of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the international legal regime governing maritime boundaries and ocean resources.
Authorities said the decision was aimed at preventing further escalation of recent incidents that have created tensions between certain institutions in both countries.
They added that arbitration would provide a lawful and structured mechanism to determine the boundary, while preserving the spirit of good neighbourliness and continued cooperation between Accra and Lomé.
Maritime boundary disputes can have significant implications for offshore resources, including oil, gas and fisheries.
There has been no immediate public response from the Togolese government.
