Ghana’s main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced a major internal restructuring drive as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.

The party’s newly elected presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, outlined the plans during a post-election thanksgiving service held on 15 February 2026 at the UPSA Auditorium in Accra.

Dr Bawumia said a strengthened policy unit would be established to refine, coordinate and promote what he described as the NPP’s alternative policy proposals.

He added that broader organisational reforms would focus on rebuilding the party’s structures at national, regional, constituency and grassroots levels.

The move follows the party’s recent internal elections, which Dr Bawumia said were peaceful but had created tensions that needed to be addressed.

“Unity, forgiveness and accountability will be essential as we begin a new phase of rebuilding,” he told supporters.

As part of efforts to restore cohesion, the NPP plans to embark on a nationwide “thank you tour” to engage grassroots supporters and party faithful.

Dr Bawumia positioned the restructuring within the wider political context, saying victory in 2028 would require discipline, humility and sustained engagement with voters.

He described the policy overhaul as central to regaining public trust and offering what he called credible governance alternatives to the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He also urged political restraint and national unity, calling on the government to avoid intimidation and partisan division.

The thanksgiving service marked the conclusion of the party’s internal electoral process and the start of what its leadership describes as a policy-driven rebuilding agenda ahead of the next general election.
