The African Union has expressed deep concern over escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf, warning that recent attacks on critical infrastructure could threaten global economic stability and energy markets.
In a statement issued on March 9, 2026, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, said the Commission is closely monitoring developments in the region following incidents that have heightened security concerns and undermined regional stability.
The AU noted that attacks targeting key infrastructure, including energy and transport facilities, are disrupting vital supply chains and could have far-reaching implications for international trade and global energy markets.
“The AUC Chairperson expresses deep concern over recent attacks on critical infrastructure… which further heightened tensions and is threatening regional and global economic stability,” the statement said.
The Commission condemned violations of international law, particularly actions that undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. It urged all parties involved in the crisis to exercise maximum restraint and prioritise dialogue and diplomacy to achieve a swift de-escalation.
According to the AU, stability in the Gulf region is crucial for global energy security and the international economy, with potential direct impacts on African economies.
The Commission warned that rising oil prices and disruptions in trade routes are already affecting markets, including exports of perishable goods from Africa. It also noted that disruptions to airspace could negatively affect African airlines and travel connectivity.
The AU further indicated that it is monitoring the broader implications of the situation for the continent, including the safety and wellbeing of African nationals and diaspora communities living in the region, particularly in Iran and countries within the Gulf Cooperation Council.
The Chairperson also called for the protection of civilians and urged authorities to ensure safe passage and support for foreign nationals, including Africans working and residing in the Middle East.
The African Union reaffirmed its commitment to international law, the peaceful resolution of disputes, and the preservation of international peace and security, adding that it will continue to closely monitor developments in the region.
