The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has strongly condemned a recent incident at the Northern Regional Hospital formerly the Tamale Central Hospital where a group of youth stormed the facility and forcibly locked up the office of the Medical Director as well as other administrative departments.
In a statement issued on November 19, 2025, and signed by GMA President Prof. Dr. (Med) Ernest Yorke and General Secretary Dr. (Dent) Richard Selormey, the Association said it had taken notice of a viral video circulating on social media showing the youth besieging parts of the hospital and obstructing access to critical administrative units, including the Out-Patients Department.
The GMA described the act as lawless, warning that the behavior of such groups puts the lives of patients and health workers at risk.
It cautioned that the growing trend of youth invading health facilities to intimidate management is a dangerous breach of public service procedures.
“The Ghana Medical Association, therefore, calls on the Police to take immediate steps to bring the perpetrators to book,” the statement read.
The Association also appealed to traditional leaders to intervene by calling the youth to order and collaborating with hospital management to address any legitimate concerns through proper channels.
According to the GMA, clear processes exist within the health sector for resolving grievances related to management or service delivery, stressing that violence must never be an option.
The Association further urged the leadership of the Ghana Health Service to ensure the immediate protection of the Medical Director and all staff while steps are taken to address any outstanding issues.
The GMA said it is closely monitoring the situation and warned that it will take the necessary actions if threats to doctors and other health workers continue.
