President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana has earned $2.7 billion in gold revenue between January and April, following the rollout of the Goldbod initiative a major government-led reform of the gold mining sector.
Speaking at the Global Mining Summit on Monday, June 2, President Mahama credited the initiative for revitalizing the gold trade and streamlining exports through the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) and the Goldbod platform. He added that the revenue figure is expected to increase as the year progresses.
“The Goldbod, a cornerstone of my administration’s efforts to reform the gold mining industry, has already shown promising results,” the president said. “In a short time, it has brought order to the gold sector, ensuring transparency and maximizing returns from our gold exports.”
The Goldbod initiative is part of a wider national strategy aimed at formalizing the gold trade, reducing illegal mining activities, and boosting state revenue from natural resources. It seeks to promote transparency and accountability across the mining value chain while ensuring Ghanaians benefit more directly from the country’s mineral wealth.
President Mahama emphasized that the reforms have not only led to significant financial gains but also improved institutional oversight within the gold mining sector.
“With these reforms, we are creating a more transparent and efficient gold industry one that works for all Ghanaians,” he stated.
