Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region on Monday stormed the offices of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra to demand the immediate release of their Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Chairman Wontumi was taken into EOCO custody on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, shortly after being granted bail by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters.
His detention follows an invitation by the police to assist in ongoing investigations into alleged illegal mining activities in which he is reportedly implicated.
Despite his legal team successfully meeting the bail conditions set at GHC 50 million party supporters say he remains in custody without clear justification.

The continued detention has sparked outrage among NPP loyalists, who gathered at EOCO’s premises on Monday to register their displeasure.
Chanting slogans and waving placards, the protesters called for transparency and fairness in the handling of the case.
Some accused the authorities of political victimization, insisting that the bail conditions had been satisfied and that Chairman Wontumi should be released without delay.
“We have complied with the law. His lawyers met every requirement for his bail. So why is he still being held?” an agitated supporter questioned.
Legal sources close to the case confirmed that the bail amount had been fully settled last week, after initial challenges in securing the GHC 50 million surety.
Neither EOCO nor the police have issued a formal statement on the delay in his release, although sources indicate that ongoing legal and administrative procedures may be responsible for the continued custody.
Chairman Wontumi is a prominent figure in the NPP and has been instrumental in mobilizing support for the party in the Ashanti Region a key stronghold for the Opposition New Patriotic party.
The situation continues to attract national attention, with many calling on authorities to uphold the rule of law and ensure due process.
