Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening security at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) through technology, improved information sharing and closer collaboration with security agencies.
The Minister made the commitment when he received the Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Professor Christian Agyare, at his office in Accra on Tuesday for discussions on strengthening collaboration between the university and the Ministry of the Interior.
The discussions focused on emerging security challenges on university campuses and ways technology could be deployed to enhance the safety and security of students, staff and visitors at KNUST.
Mr Mubarak congratulated Professor Agyare on his appointment and commended KNUST for its contribution to education, research, innovation and Ghana’s socio-economic development.
He said the Ministry was ready to deepen its collaboration with the university, particularly in the use of technology to identify and close security gaps.
According to him, the collaboration would complement initiatives being pursued by the Ministry to modernise security operations and improve service delivery, including efforts towards the introduction of nationwide online background checks.
The Minister further assured the Vice-Chancellor and his delegation of the Ministry’s support for KNUST’s security initiatives, adding that opportunities would be explored for partnerships in technology, research and innovation within the security sector.
Beyond technology-based solutions, Mr Mubarak said the Ministry would work with the Ghana Police Service to strengthen police visibility on the KNUST campus through regular patrols and other appropriate security measures.
He stressed that ensuring the safety and security of universities was essential to creating a conducive environment for teaching, learning, research and innovation.
The Minister said the Ministry remained committed to working with KNUST and other institutions of higher learning to build safer and more secure campuses across the country.
The engagement forms part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between security authorities and tertiary institutions in responding to evolving security concerns through technology, research, information sharing and enhanced police presence.
