The Government has commissioned a newly constructed bridge over the River Offin at Kotokuom in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region, replacing an old structure that had become a death trap for commuters.
The project, promised by the then opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 election campaign, was completed within six months and formally opened to traffic on Tuesday, August 27, 2025.
Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Alhaji Suhini Ahassan, who represented Roads Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza, described the bridge as “a symbol of hope that has removed fear and restored safety for commuters in Kotokuom.”
He noted that the government prioritized the reconstruction of the bridge under its flagship Big Push Agenda, stressing that infrastructure development remained a cornerstone of President John Mahama’s administration.
“The swift response to the reconstruction of this bridge was a top priority for government. Your patience has given birth to excellent work that will open the Kotokuom community to development and trade,” he said.
The Ashanti Regional Minister also urged miners in the area to cooperate with government measures to curb illegal mining.
He encouraged them to take advantage of the newly introduced Cooperative Mining Scheme, which seeks to provide a structured and sustainable approach to small-scale mining.
He further disclosed that President Mahama had directed that all seized excavators be returned to their rightful owners.
Community leaders expressed gratitude to the government for fulfilling its campaign promise.
Nana Kofi Fofie, who spoke on behalf of the Kotokuom community, said the old bridge, constructed in 1957, had never been renovated until now.
“This project has brought great relief to us. The previous government ignored our calls, but thanks to the NDC government, we now have a safe and modern bridge.
We are monitoring the progress of this government, and we know where our votes will go in 2028,” he declared.
The District Chief Executive for Atwima Mponua, Issaq Ibrahim, said the new bridge would significantly improve the transportation of farm produce to urban centers.
He urged residents to take full ownership of the facility to ensure its protection and longevity.
The Kotokuom bridge, once notorious for accidents and structural weakness, is now expected to enhance trade, transportation, and community safety in the district.
