Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has disclosed that a docket has been prepared in connection with investigations into the free Wi-Fi project involving former Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO.
According to Kwakye Ofosu, the case forms part of a broader anti-corruption effort in which multiple dockets have been compiled and submitted to the Attorney General for further action.
Speaking on the matter, he indicated that Dr Opoku Prempeh has already been invited, questioned and cautioned as part of the investigative process.
“There’s a free Wi-Fi case involving Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh. He himself has publicly said that he has been invited and questioned, and the docket has been prepared,” he stated.
The investigation into the free Wi-Fi initiative also reportedly involves several other persons of interest, as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the project.
Dr Opoku Prempeh, who served as Education Minister and Energy Minister under the Akuffo Addo led New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, later emerged as the running mate to Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the 2024 general elections.
His selection was seen as a strategic move to strengthen the party’s ticket, given his prominence within the NPP and previous role as Minister of Education.
The free Wi-Fi project, which was introduced as part of government’s digitalisation drive, aimed to expand internet access across the country, particularly in public institutions. However, it has since come under scrutiny over procurement processes and implementation.
He added, ” NAPO is also under another investigation in connection with Mathimatical set contract for students when he was serving as Minister of eduction” .
Kwakye Ofosu stressed that the preparation of a docket does not imply guilt but signals that investigations have reached an advanced stage and could lead to prosecution.
He added that two dockets are currently ready for prosecution, with more cases expected to proceed to court in the coming weeks as authorities intensify efforts to ensure accountability.
The developments form part of a wider probe into several high-profile cases, including those related to the National Service Authority, the Accra SkyTrain project and other public sector transactions.
He further disclosed that number of former government appointee are in court facing prosecution yet some people they claim the Oral report is dead.
