The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have suspended plans to increase public transport fares following the government’s GH¢2.00 per litre intervention on diesel.
The two transport bodies said the decision followed an engagement with the Ministry of Transport on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, to review proposed fares for the 2026 fare window.
The unions had submitted a proposal for an upward adjustment in transport fares but have agreed to reassess the proposal in light of the government’s fuel intervention and its potential impact on the operating costs of commercial transport operators.
In a joint statement, the GPRTU and GRTCC stressed that no decision has been taken to increase transport fares.
Both sides, according to the statement, acknowledged the importance of the diesel intervention and agreed that its impact on transport operating costs should be factored into the fare review before a final decision is reached.
A joint team comprising representatives of the Ministry of Transport, the GPRTU and the GRTCC has subsequently been established to examine the various cost components used in determining transport fares.
The unions said the exercise was intended to arrive at an adjustment that would be fair to both transport operators and passengers.
“The outcome of this exercise will be communicated to the general public in due course,” the statement said.
In the meantime, the existing approved transport fares remain in force nationwide.
The GPRTU and GRTCC have consequently directed drivers, station masters and transport owners to continue charging the current approved fares until further notice.
“We wish to reassure the public that existing approved fares remain in force across the country,” the unions stressed.
They also appealed to drivers, transport operators and passengers to remain calm and cooperate with authorities while consultations on the proposed fare review continue.
