The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called for calm following a violent protest at Tamale Technical University (TaTU) over what students described as an exorbitant tuition fees.
On September 16, 2025, hundreds of aggrieved students took to the streets, burning car tyres and blocking the main road leading to the university in a dramatic demonstration of their frustration. The protest disrupted academic activities and derailed vehicular movement, drawing national attention to the university’s fee increment policy.
In response, Minister Iddrisu visited the TaTU campus on Friday to assess the situation and engaged with stakeholders. While condemning the violent nature of the protest, he acknowledged the students’ concerns and assured them that the government was taking steps to address the issues.
“While we do not condone any form of violence,” the Minister stated, “I want to assure the students of TATU that their concerns have been heard. The government is committed to resolving this issue, but I urge all of you to remain calm and peaceful as we work through the process.”
The Minister emphasized the importance of dialogue and peaceful engagement, urging the student body to allow ongoing consultations between the Ministry of Education, the university administration, and student leaders to proceed without further disruption.
Student leaders have insisted that the recent hike in tuition fees is unjustified, especially in light of the current economic hardship faced by many families. They are demanding an immediate review and rollback of the new fee structure.
University authorities have issued a formal statement, but sources say a crisis meeting has been convened to explore possible solutions.
As tension remains on campus, security has been heightened to prevent further escalation.
