Prof. Dr. Otchere Addai Mensah, former CEO of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, has voiced concern over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) failure to complete the Sewua Government Hospital, highlighting its strategic importance.
In an interview with Kojo Marfo on the Bresosem program on Abusua 96.5 FM, Prof. Addai Mensah expressed disappointment that successive governments tend to initiate new projects rather than finish those already underway.
He specifically critiqued the NPP, stating, “In the budget, the government mentioned constructing six additional regional hospitals. I am saddened that during the NPP’s tenure, the Sewua Hospital was left incomplete.”
He emphasized the hospital’s strategic location, explaining that many patients who currently travel to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and other facilities could be served more efficiently if Sewua Hospital were operational.
Prof Addai Mensah stated, “Sewua Hospital is strategic. Strategic in what sense? If you look at that enclave, the people who travel to Komfo Anokye and other places would go there.
“Look at Afari Hospital and how it could have taken the load from that enclave. It was one of the important projects that should have been completed, but we could not finish it,” he added.
Prof. Addai Mensah also reflected on the political dynamics behind project completion, noting, “It is common for new governments to prefer starting fresh projects rather than continuing those initiated by predecessors. This is partly because ongoing projects nearing completion don’t always garner full credit for the incoming administration.”
He acknowledged that some argue there are benefits to starting projects from scratch to ensure full government ownership and credit, rather than taking over previous administrations’ work.
