The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to field Joe Danquah as their parliamentary candidate for the Banda constituency for the fifth time may prove to be a costly mistake.
Despite the party’s efforts to develop the area, including the construction of the Manji to Banda road, among other other developmental projects the constituents continue to vote against the NPP.
The reason for this lies not with the party’s policies or performance but with Joe Danquah himself as leader of the party’s campaign activities .
He has consistently demonstrated a lack of respect for traditional leaders and intellectuals in the constituency, leading to widespread dislike and mistrust.
Traditional leaders have expressed their discontent with Danquah’s behavior, citing his failure to attend traditional council meetings and his history of causing confusion during election periods in the constituency that continue to give Banda Constituency bad name in the media.
One elder even alleged that Danquah stormed a fishing community in military uniform with the support of some vigilante group set their structures of Voltarian fishing cottage alone the black volta on fire, displacing them all as effort to deny them their voting rights in 2020 general elections.
Such actions have led to a strong opposition against Danquah, with many stakeholders and intellectuals in the constituency refusing to support him.
The NPP’s chances of winning the Banda parliamentary seat are slim as long as Danquah remains their candidate.
In fact, the party’s own performance in the 2020 elections was affected by Danquah’s actions, leading to a painful defeat despite winning the majority of votes on election day.
The special voting results revealed a clear lack of trust in Danquah among the constituents. With Joe Danquah unable to campaign effectively in Banda Ahenkro, the district capital where most voters reside, the NPP’s chances of winning the seat are bleak.
It may be time for the party to reconsider their candidate and choose someone who can unite the constituency and bring about positive change.
The NPP must take a hard look at Danquah’s behavior and consider whether he is the right person to represent them in the constituency.
Currently over 400 NPP members in the constituency have defected from the NPP to the NDC majority of them coming from Banda Kabrono citing they do not have future in the NPP until Joe Danqual leaves the party.
The people of Banda deserve better. They deserve a representative who will listen to their concerns, respect their traditions, and work tirelessly to bring about positive change. Joe Danquah has consistently demonstrated that he is not that person.
