Former President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a comprehensive education plan aimed at reducing the financial burden on students and parents in public tertiary institutions should the National Democratic Congress (NDC) return to power in the 2024 general elections.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Mahama outlined several key policy initiatives designed to make education more accessible and affordable for Ghanaians.
One of the central pillars of the NDC’s education policy is the introduction of a No-Academic-Fees Policy for first-year students in public tertiary institutions.
The former President Mahama emphasized that this initiative, as articulated by Joseph Ogyemoko Baleto in a recent docuseries, will ensure that students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, can begin their academic journey without the financial stress of paying academic fees in their first year.
“Our No-Academic-Fees Policy will enable many of our unfortunate brothers and sisters to enjoy a worry-free start to their academic journey,” Mahama stated, highlighting the party’s commitment to easing the financial strain on students.
In addition to the fee exemption, the NDC plans to revamp the Student Loan Trust Fund, increasing loan amounts based on individual student needs and ensuring that disbursements are made promptly.
To further support continuing students after the first year, Mahama announced the reintroduction of the Student Loan Trust Fund Plus, which will provide financial assistance to help cover academic, hostel, and other associated fees.
The NDC’s education agenda also prioritizes students with disabilities, offering them free tertiary education as part of the party’s broader goal of ensuring equal opportunities for all.
As part of a long-term strategy to sustain financial support for students, the NDC will establish Tertiary Endowment Funds (TEF).
These funds, developed in partnership with alumni, philanthropists, and corporate Ghana, will provide lasting financial assistance to students across public universities, helping to reduce the financial burdens faced by both students and their families.
In a nod to past policies, Mahama reiterated his commitment to restoring allowances for teacher and nurse trainees. Under the new plan, these trainees will also have access to student loans and other funding options to ease their financial struggles while pursuing their education.
Mahama concluded his message by urging Ghanaians to support the NDC’s vision for a brighter and more inclusive future for students.
“Under the Mahama and NDC administration, quality education will be within everyone’s reach. That is why I invite you to join us in building a brighter, more inclusive future for all students,” Mahama wrote.
“#Choose8 and vote for John Mahama to make education accessible. Together, we can ease the financial stress of education for the Ghanaian student.”
As the 2024 election campaign intensifies, the NDC’s focus on education policy positions the party as a champion for student welfare and a driver of financial relief for families across Ghana.
